SUMMARY:Handel's Messiah - Portsmouth Choral Union with Southern Pro Musica
DESCRIPTION:Conductor: David Gostick\nPortsmouth Choral Union with Southern Pro Musica\nTenor: Nicholas Sharratt\nSoprano: Luci Briginshaw\nAlto: Rebecca Lodge Birkebaek\nBass: Edwin Kaye \nPCU sang The Messiah for the first time in 1896. With W.E Green as Musical Director this became an annual event for the choir until 1963\, when it had been performed 68 times in consecutive years! PCU last performed it in 2015. This performance will be the 82nd by Portsmouth Choral Union. An amazing achievement! \nHandel composed his most famous piece in 1741\, and continued to work on it after its initial performance\, finally arriving at the version we know today in 1754. Impressive solo arias\, like ‘Ev’ry valley shall be exalted’ and ‘Rejoice greatly\, O daughter of Zion’ are interspersed with compelling chorus numbers\, telling the story of Jesus’ birth\, life\, death\, resurrection\, and final victory over sin and death.\nHandel deliberately kept the dramatic content of his Messiah understated – it was in church after all. He created a piece based on three concepts: the story of the nativity and its prophecy; that of the crucifixion and redemption of mankind; and a commentary on the Christian soul and its victory over death.\nThe rousing ‘Hallelujah’ Chorus is one of the most famous pieces of Baroque choral music\, and by far the most widely-known section of the work. \nFinally\, this performance will\, I believe\, be the 82nd time that PCU has performed this piece – that in itself is a huge achievement!

SUMMARY:The Organ Project Recital Series 2023 - Simon Taranczuk
DESCRIPTION:The Organ Project’s 2023 Organ Recital series continues at 7pm on 13th October\, with a recital given by Simon Taranczuk\, Director of Music at King’s Worcester. Join us for a fantastic free recital\, with a retiring collection for the Music Foundation\, performed on our recently-restored 1889 J.W. Walker & Sons pipe organ. Refreshments will be included\, with no booking required. For programme details\, please visit The Organ Project’s website. \nSimon Taranczuk was born in Portsmouth in 1974 and went to school at City Boys’. His musical career began just down the road at All Saints which\, at the time\, had a very strong choral tradition. At 16 he took up his first organ post at St Thomas’\, Bedhampton before his appointment as the first Hampshire County Council Organ Scholar at St Mary’s in 1991 at the same time as the beginning of the Music Foundation and held the post for two years. He studied the organ with Adrian Lucas at the Cathedral. He was appointed Organ Scholar at the University of Hull where he was also Assistant Organist at Beverley Minster. At Beverley he worked under the expert guidance of Dr Alan Spedding MBE.\nBefore taking up the post of Director of Music at King’s Worcester in September 2013\, his two previous posts were as Director of Music at King’s\, Rochester and Director of Chapel Music at Marlborough College. Whilst at Marlborough he directed the Chapel Choir on tours to Paris and Rome and took part in Masses at Notre Dame and St Peter’s. A CD of choral and instrumental music was also released celebrating the 125th anniversary of the College Chapel. At King’s he is responsible for the day to day running of the Music Department\, teaching all year groups and directing various ensembles. The Choir and Chamber Orchestra have taken part in two successful tours in recent years to Paris and\, in February this year\, Venice where they took part in Mass at St Mark’s Basilica.
