SUMMARY:Once a Sea
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another art installation in St Mary’s Church\, developed by Heinrich & Palmer who previously brought us the Ship of Gods. Created specifically for St Mary’s Church\, Once A Sea reflects back to 35 million years ago when Portsmouth was covered by sea\, in part inspired by the flints which make up the outside of the church. The exhibition combines archival imagery\, high-speed film\, microscopy\, and 3D laser scans of the church to create a millennia-spanning\, awe-inspiring projection. \nTo see St Mary’s Church transformed\, join us from 5-9pm on the 21st-23rd November\, and from 4.30-9pm on the 24th-27th. As well as this impressive installation\, we will be holding a series of activities to celebrate our community and reflect on this installation. As part of We Shine\, Fratton Together’s Festival of Light will start at 7pm on Friday 22nd November at the Victory Business Centre and process towards the churchyard\, where there will be a series of light installations\, activities\, and refreshments\, on top of the opportunity to see Once A Sea. \nThen from 6.30-7.15pm on the 24th-27th November\, there will be a series of activities:\n– Sun 24th: Live Music in accompaniment with the projection\n– Mon 25th: Yoga ‘By the Sea’ (please book on Eventbrite)\n– Tues 26th: Live Music in accompaniment with the projection\n– Wed 27th: Dancing in accompaniment with the projection \nThere is no need to book (apart from the Yoga)\, just turn up and enjoy! \n \nPhoto Credit: Heinrich & Palmer

SUMMARY:Organ Recital by Chris Milburn
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a less ‘traditional’ Organ Recital given by Chris Milburn\, former parishioner & chorister who frequently practiced on our organ when he was younger. Since then he has gone on to have a varied career\, including sourcing the Compton Theatre Organ in Titchfield Festival Theatre – an instrument remarkable for its additional percussion\, bells & whistles. \nEntry to this concert is free\, with a retiring collection in aid of the Music Foundation\, supporting the musical education of young people in our local community. \nChris writes: \n“So often\, church organs are only used to play the more serious works\, the hymns\, the psalms and the anthems. Whilst these works are amazing to listen to\, there is another genre of music that rarely gets played\, or rarely played in public: Pop\, rock\, film\, jazz etc. \nSo\, if you would like to hear the marvellous organ of St Mary’s as you would rarely hear it on a Sunday morning\, why not pop along to hear a lighter side of music: Pink Panther\, ABBA\, Queen\, Jungle Book to name a few. There might be a few Souza marches\, getting close to ‘normal organ music’ but great fun to play… \nSo please pop along on Friday 11th October at 7pm to St Mary’s\, Fratton (for about an hour) where you can hear a very different style of organ music. I hope to see you there.”
